De Lakenhal

Vandaag heropende museum de Lakenhal in leiden na twee jaar gesloten te zijn geweest wegens renovatie. Gedurende drie dagen was er een programma met poëzie, talkshows, muziekvoorstellingen en dans. Voor mij als geboren Leidenaar en iemand die veel tijd in Leiden heeft doorgebracht  was het een aanleiding om te gaan kijken wat die twee jaar hebben opgeleverd. Het belangrijkst vond ik de nieuwbouw met daarin twee mooie grote zalen waarin hedendaagse kunst optimaal getoond kan worden. Tijdens de opening hingen er esthetische foto’s van de verbouwing van de Vlaamse Karin Borghouts en foto’s van een project van Marjan Teeuwen: zij had de huizen aan de achterkant van het complex aan de Lammermarkt die afgebroken werden voor nieuwbouw een periode ter beschikking gekregen. Foto’s van het opengebroken interieur van die panden met allerlei stapelingen en de daarmee ontstane structuur  en van  oudere projecten waren hier te zien. Aan de achterkant van die ruimte is een mooi groot raam dat uitkijkt op molen de Valk, tijdens de dansvoorstelling vormde dat een mooie achtergrond.

In de rest van het gebouw  zijn veel zaken herzien: ruimtes zijn doorgebroken en opnieuw open gesteld. Na door het voorplein te zijn gegaan is nu na binnenkomst een grote entree-ruimte ontstaan die uitkijkt op een gloednieuwe façade.  Het is een bijzonder prettige, lichte ruimte opzij waarvan er zoals het een goed museum betaamd een grote museumshop is ontstaan en aan de andere kant, in een soort pijpenla die uitkomt op de Oude Singel bevindt zich nu een restaurant. Het museum heeft bovendien een groot auditorium waar veel activiteiten kunnen plaats vinden, vandaag werden daar de talkshows gehouden. Bij deze een indruk van het vandaag getoonde:

Ik weet niet van wie de foto is, maar de vrouw is de fantastische Haagse actrice Ellen Vogel als ik het wel heb… Dat contemporaine werk hangt tussen de vaste collectie en voeg zich daar mooi naar.

Thomas Raat mocht een project uitvoeren en gebruikt daarin het hertje van Van Meegeren al structureel element

naast allerlei andere structuren

Sfeervolle muziek werd uitgevoerd door de Veenfabriek, Paul Koeks’ Leidse club. Hier delen uit “Stilte en de kunst van het verdwijnen” door Jacobien Elffers (zang en teksten) en Bastiaan Woltjer (trombone en electronica)

In een opnieuw geopende kapel kreeg Iemke van Dijk opdracht een glas in lood raam te ontwerpen dat mooi in de museumcollectie past.

Erwin Olaf heeft ook in Leiden gewerkt aan een nieuw historiestuk: Liberty, pest en honger tijdens Leiden’s beleg – 2013

Het nabij gelegen Volkenkundig Museum werkte al met Roy Villevoie, nu is hier zijn “Preparation” uit 2009 te zien.

Tot slot zag ik nog de uit voering van “Echo” door DansBlok”. De nieuwe zaal nodigt uit tot dit soort activiteiten

Platforms Project- Beton Radio – day 3

Today I visited some of the stands at Platforms Project 2018 to check out what they were doïng, here are some things I liked:

I thought I heard the sound of a didgeridoo, but it was the vynil recording of a human voice. Very interesting sound and letter experiments at Random from Italy

Sandra Gea made a beautiful autobiografical collage and shows it at Binary Art Group from Malta

IS-projects is a very interesting platform from Leiden (NL). International abstract art in wonderful presentations, an oasis in this fair, curated by Richard van der Aa!

Das Esszimmer from Bonn (G) is an interesting platform too, here with the work of Geneviève Morin

Which I really like for the painterly quality

Meanwhile an avantgarde jam-session is taking place at Daily Temporary. Exhibiting artist Lars Asling bought an old guitar and invites people to come play with him

The Wonderful MUU from Helsinki has a number of video’s to show amongst which Jukka Sillokunas stood out with this video about vanishing toy-pets. MUU also showed a really interesting educational project with kid-curators showing their choice of art.

Come alone, don’t call cops (what a name, by the way!) where the performance “Concrete execution” by Adrien Chevrier took place: a concrete mixer was mistreated

and misused while it was turning

Everything was out of context, out of sequence, out of measurements

And eventually the beast was killed, it stopped turning

Meanwhile Ellen was still trying to get a passport and she was send from the cupboard to the wall as we say in Holland

People kept coming in to cut and paste the collages of EX-MÊKH

There were a lot of side shows, open studios in art school but also “Giving”, this benefit for the blind. 210 artists participated in this.

After having dinner in the hip area near the Keramikos subwaystation we went to Beton 7  which hosts an international  show by IS-projects from Leiden (NL) under the name “RNOP – HELLENIKON” and “Doldrums”, a video installation by Jenn E. Norton.

The first space was occupied by a very effective installation-piece by Daniel Gottin which gave the place a structure to be used by the artist of the show

This is the work of Richard van der Aa who curated the IS presentation at Platforms Project.

Next to his are the works of Kyle Jenkins (AU) and Peter Holm (DK)

This is the work of IS-initiator Iemke van Dijk (NL)

And this is the work of the second IS-initiator Guido Winkler (NL)

This is the work of Billy Gruner (AUS), the curator of this show.

In the other space we could see the work of Jenn E. Norton. Doldrums is a video-installation in which light-reflection on refelective surfaces transmitting information through light.

It’s supposed to be seen with 3D glasses which causes a rather trancy atmosphere, which is enhanced by the slowly undulating waves and the music being played

Near this we find a paradoxical booth of Provo Principles from Greece, clearly engaged in the present situation

With a heap of débris from the artists studios

and art in small match boxes

which work out nicely

Atrans from Berlin shows Marian Wijnvoord again with romantic landscapes

The artist has created. work in new techniques, oilpaint on photopaper

and she is clearly satisfied with the result. We are happy that Atrans will coöperate with EX-MÊKH in Berlin in september. Here you see Marian Wijnvoord and Isolde Nagel, the initiator of Atrans in front of their booth.

and nice sculptures were to be found

IS-Projects from Leiden (the Netherlands) was one of my favourites

With an exhibit of abstract art curated by John Tallman

an esthetic oasis in this context.

With the work of initiators Guido Winkler and Iemke van Dijk next to eachother

Lo and Behold is a very interesting initiative witrh actions in public space

with a great number of artists participating, amongst whom a favourite of last year: Maria Lianou

and others whom I don’t know

Incart from Mallorca made a very lively impression

From Rotterdam came our friends of the Tupajumi Foundation with the TFHMF-award

This dynamic work was selected from the USA and came in just before the opening of the fair due to delay at customs.

I personally voted for this piece by Maarten Bel

Art Athina 2015-VII – Talks: Dutch Initiatives @ Platform Projects

Today, saturday, was a very busy day: there was an unending stream of visitors goïng past our booth and in the afternoon we were part of Talks, a part of Art Athena in which discussions and lectures were pesented to an interested audience. Together with three other initiatives from Holland we tried to give an idea of our artistic practice. The space was not crowded but the talks were received well. As for EX-MÊKH: Greek artists wondered about how we financed all our activities. The city of Den Haag and especially STROOM, the bureau that executes cultural politics of the city, is very active in facilitating artistic endeavour. In spite of the national budget cuts artists in Den Haag have serious advantages because of the policy of this institution. On the other hand a project like the Malieveld does not cost a cent, it just takes energy to go to the Malieveld every week, to create something there and to discuss it. George Oreopoulos, the mediator of the talks wanted to know how high the tension would get between the three participators in EX-MÊKH during our projects, but I could reassure him: though discussions can get fierce we are and will stay good friends which helps a lot to get results. The other initiatives: IS-Projects from Leiden, the Tupajumi-Foundation from Rotterdam and kunstenaarsinitiatief Elders from Den Haag also showed their activities of which the first two are not only national. Elders from Den Haag is still young, but they do strive for more international exposure trying to get attention to the quality of perception of art. here you wil find some pictures:

Questions were answered accordingly

IS-Projects was represented by Iemke van Dijk and curating artist John Talmann. First Iemke told about how IS Projects started in their own home in Leiden and how they developed in an initiative that is not very well known in Holland, but shows mainly international activities. Then Tallman explained about how their presentation @ Platforms Project came to life. ( Sorry for the bad picture, something went wrong at that time)

Finally Liesbeth van Woerden and Liesbeth Bos of kunstenaarsinitiatief Elders explained their preconditions and showed mood pictures of their activities which worked wonderful in combination with the graphic mind-maps.

Slow Frieze/Oeuvreprijs

Deze vrijdag had een drukke namiddag met twee openingen in Den Haag (en dan was er ook nog iets in de Kunstkring, maar dat wist ik niet). In eerste instantie was ik erg nieuwsgierig naar Slow Frieze, een uitgebreide herhaling van een tentoonstelling die Eric de Nie eerder in Haarlem maakte met uitsluitend abstract werk. Deze tentoonstelling vindt plaats in GEMAK, zoals de Vrije Academie nu dan maar gaat heten en als dit de aanzet is tot een nieuw begin dan mag het er wezen! De ruimtes van GEMAK hebben een verstilde en onthaaste sfeer door het werk van een tiental abstract werkende kunstenaars die allen mooi samen gaan. De curator, Eric de Nie dus, sloot aan bij die onthaasting en nam de tijd met in zijn openingstoespraak een korte beschrijving van iedere kunstenaar waarbij hij in elk van het werk van die kunstenaars aanleiding zag tot een uitweiding of een associatie die het individuele werk ontsteeg en iets vertelde over het maken van deze kunstvorm. In de tentoonstelling was werk te zien van een aantal mij bekende kunstenaars als bijvoorbeeld Clary Stolte met haar installatie of Mark de Weijer met zijn wanddecoratie/schilderijen. Zij wisten mij met mooi nieuw werk te verrassen, maar waar ik echt door geraakt werd was een werk van Veerle Thoben die ik eerder hier linkte met een foto uit haar galerie. Het werk dat in GEMAK te zien is is heel subtiel en poetisch: zeer de moeite ward om te bekijken.

En vervolgens was ik nog even op het feestje van Christie van der Haak die haar solotentoonstelling opende bij HEDEN naar aanleiding van de Oeuvreprijs die ze bij de voormalige Artoteek Den Haag kreeg het afgelopen jaar. Het was daar voornamelijk erg druk en bepaald gezellig bij HEDEN. In de tentoonstellingsruimte was een soort tent met stofontwerpen van de kunstenaar te zien, maar door de drukte ging dat wat verloren. Verder waren voorbeelden uit diverse perioden van haar carrière te bewonderen: keramiek, schilderijen, allerlei stoffen en stofontwerpen: het is duidelijk dat ze de prijs niet voor niets gekregen heeft!

Die soms verrassend praktisch gebruikt worden als deze theedoek waarnaast een bord van van der Haak hangt

Schilderen kan de kunstenaar ook zoals op een ouder werk hier blijkt

En ik vermoed dat dit soort tekeningen de basis is voor de stofontwerpen
