Art Rotterdam 2020 bestaat uit verschillende onderdelen: naast de beurs en Prospects & Concepts, dit jaar gecureerd door 1646’s Johan Gustavson, is er een Performancefestival in samenwerking met AVL. Dit festival is gecureerd door Zippora Elders. Ook Haute Photographie met foto’s en Object Rotterdam met design vinden in deze week plaats in respectievelijk Las Palmas en het HAKA-gebouw. En dan zijn er nog de nodige open ateliers en andere open instellingen. Er is kortom meer dan genoeg te doen om publiek van heinde en verre naar Rotterdam te trekken. Vandaag bezocht ik de persopening van de beurs in het van Nelle gebouw waarin dit allemaal uitgelegd werd door Fons Hof c.s. Daarna de beurs: veel buitenlandse galeries en naar mijn idee veel onrustige presentaties. Ik sprak met verschillende mensen over de strategie om alles te zien zonder iets te missen: die was bepaald niet vanzelfsprekend! Van wat ik zelf de moeite waard vond vindt u hier een overzicht:
Tijdens de presentatie van Prospects & Concepts sprak de directeur van het Mondriaanfonds, Eelco van der Lingen, en vertelde de curator van de presentatie van beursontvangers, Johan Gustavson om zijn uitgangspunten te verduidelijken. Even een Haags kwartiertje dus!

Ton van Kints stapelt zijn werk tegenwoordig en werkt het dan af met iets kleurigs. Het resultaat is wel erg goed.

Jeroen Kuster feest in Roodkapje vrijdag en neemt daarvoor een aantal bands/DJ’s mee uit Frankrijk waar hij resideerde

Bij de NN-awards Koen Taselaar als kandidaat
met een heel diverse presentatie.
Dan Prospects & Concepts dat wat meer helderheid bood in de irichting dan eerdere edities. Hier met werk van Annabel Kanaar dat persoonlijke ervaringen in verband brengt met universele sentimenten: A universal love story between two lobsters – 2019

Die ook stenen verzamelt
Een grote installatie van Wouter van der Laan die zijn atelier verplaatst naar locaties
En daarmee erg goed werk laat zien
Suzie van Staaveren werkt met bomen
En Maud van den Beuken scande de Missisippi river om die door piepschuim uit te frezen hier te recreëren
Dit is dan een plakje uit de bodem als ik het goed begrijp. Echts de kunstenaar in gesprek met een collega
Ook Mickey Yang had een startstipendium en toont hier een deel van de installatie Closed Eyes die ze eerder in P/////AKT liet zien.
En dan nog een schilderijtje van Ralf Kokke die een nieuwe vorm van Hollandse schilderkuknst laat zien

Today Platforms opened late, so we had a chance to visit Documenta again. First we headed for ASFA, The Athens School of Fine Arts, a beautiful space I visited before during Art Athina. Near ASFA we could also find some other small places with art from Documenta. After that I decided to go to EMST, the new Museum of Contemporary Art, a venue I had wanted to visit for some years. It had once been the FIX-brewery, well known Greek beer had been brewn here. After demolishing half of the building for a new subway-station, what remained was turned into a museum building which was left unused for some time, untill Documenta wanted to make use of it. The building is beautiful and it has nice spaces. It makes me think of the new SF-MOMA, the way the stairway goes up on the side of the building and by the way the facade is put up. I do think the routing is not very clear though, especially in case of a continuïng exhibition like the one I visited now.

In a house on the way we found a project by Olabong Nkanga, a soap factory named Carved to Flow.
Natural Soap was presented here, this is manufactured with charcoal, water and natural fats like oil and butter from al over the Mediterranian and Africa
Laboratory stuff and a stamp for large pieces
In the house next door a subtle installation was made by Nikhil Chopra. During a performance of three days he made a wall drawing and a number of little artifacts. After this he set of for a road trip through Eastern Europe in the direction of Kassel. On the way he will do performances, public drawings and collaborative events.
The little clay models are moving
and the open sea in clay on the wall is rather overwhelming!

Artur Zmijewski – Glimpse 2016-2017 A rather confronting video about the refugees in Calais ending up in paris underneath the metro. The director tries to have them integrated by teaching them to wipe the streets with a broom or by having them painting their faces white.
Olaf Holzapfel: Zaun -abstract work with natural materials, like cane or in this case straw. These are normally beïng used for fences or other useful things
Bouchra Khalili: The Tempest Society – talking heads telling about experiences in a strange land with beautiful music in between
